CBN: What is Cannabinol?

The mild CBN cannabinoid is becoming recognized for its low psychoactive effects, providing rest and relief for medical cannabis users.

Found much less frequently than CBD or THC in cannabis, CBN is touted most prominently for its mild yet sedating effects. The way it is produced by the cannabis plant might shed a bit more light on the rarity of it. CBN, or cannabinol, develops as THC degrades. It’s been long thought that aged cannabis flower has particularly sleepy effects when smoked and this is due to the increased presence of CBN. Increasing awareness around CBN has medically focused cannabis companies working to incorporate it into their products.

What Is CBN Good For?

Those who struggle with sleep may find CBN to be a great ally for achieving a more restful night. Additionally, the Journal of Neuroscience also identified CBN as a powerful pain reliever.

“Our findings are compatible with the existence of a novel cannabinoid receptor/ion channel, possibly belonging to the TRP ion channel family, which could be targeted by future analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs devoid of psychotropic effects.” - The Journal of Neuroscience

In more normal terms, the science is suggesting that CBN has real potential for achieving rest and pain relief with a lower chance of psychoactive effects. Additionally, CBN, like many other cannabinoids, exhibits antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

"CBN seems to be less intoxicating, and heavily sedating. Adding CBN to your evening regiment may help you achieve deeper more restful sleep…" -Matt, Medical Cannabis Consultant at The Novel Tree Medical.
